My Story: I was a Nationwide Health Plans subscriber. I had a rare noncancerous tumor in my head which was expensive to remove. It was successful and I am expected to live a normal life span. I paid my December and January bills on January 23rd, prior to a cancellation notice being sent, and they canceled me and cashed my checks. Perhaps they saw the opportunity to drop me on a technicality, thinking (incorrectly) that I was a bad risk. (The high risk is behind me at this point.) I appealed hoping that the company with the slogan “on your side” will live up to the values they proclaim. They have rejected my appeal and refused to enroll me in a new policy. They explained that under the terms of the contract, they are entitled to do as they did. To add insult to injury, Nationwide has come after me to reimburse them for my prescriptions due to the retroactive cancellation. To make matters even worse, they have a collections agency coming at me for double what I owe under the assumption that the cancellation was done correctly.
How was my family was treated by the Nationwide Health Plans and did they live up to their slogan Nationwide On Your Side ??
Bottom Line: The lesson is if you subscribe to Nationwide Health Plans, get on an automatic payment plan or consider not using them at all because not only can they cancel you, but they seem willing to cancel you for a slightly late payment.
My health history details: I had a small noncancerous pituitary tumor which caused excess growth hormone (acromegaly). The removal of the tumor was expensive but they were able to remove the whole tumor which was causing the excess growth hormone. (If they had not been able to remove the whole tumor, then I would continue to have very high medical expenses for medication or surgery to fight the excess growth hormone.)
